Rwanda Nyamasheke Coffee: Volcanic Sweetness in Your Cup
This time, our search for the Cup of Excellence takes us to Rwanda, a small country in East Africa that, with its mountainous geography, rich volcanic soils, and temperate climate, offers ideal conditions for growing high-altitude Arabica coffee.

Coffee has been an important part of the economy since colonial times when the Belgians introduced its cultivation. After the 1994 genocide, it became a key tool for economic and social reconstruction. Today, Rwanda is a little-known gem but increasingly appreciated in the world of specialty coffee.
Coffee is one of its main export products. As in many African countries, it provides employment to hundreds of thousands of smallholders who handpick the coffee cherries. These farmers join local cooperatives with communal washing stations, resulting in clean and homogeneous coffees with a bright cup that multiplies its value in international markets. The challenge: coffees from different producers are often mixed, making traceability difficult.
Rwanda Nyamasheke Bourbon: Specialty Coffee in Excellence
The country’s most recognized coffee-growing area is likely the Nyamasheke region. This stunning natural reserve is located in the southwest of Rwanda, in the Western Province, along the shores of Lake Kivu, which provides a humid and stable microclimate.

The coffee grows between 1,500 and 2,100 meters above sea level, an ideal altitude that allows the fruit to mature slowly and develop great complexity in the cup. The region is known for its Bourbon variety coffee, a true gem of coffee whose historical origins trace back to the island of Réunion. Coffees of this variety are characterized by a sweet cup that, at the same time, offers a wide range of citrus and floral notes.
It is a delicate variety, not very resistant to diseases, which requires great care and artisanal handling. In these privileged valleys, it has found the perfect environment to thrive and deliver its best fruit.
In addition to the red Bourbon (the most abundant in the country and the one we have selected for this Cup of Excellence), there are other highly prized local varieties, such as Jackson 2 and Mbirizi.
Rwanda Nyamasheke Coffee Tasting Notes
Nyamasheke’s red Bourbon is highly valued in the specialty coffee world for its natural sweetness and bright yet balanced acidity. It stands out for its silky, medium-density body and its great complexity of flavors: tropical fruits (pineapple, mango), citrus (orange, mandarin), and flowers (jasmine, hibiscus). A coffee opportunity you can’t miss.
